DIPLOMATIC FAB: First Lady Michelle Gets Earthy In South Africa

Posted by chubbyafro - June 24th, 2011

First Lady Michelle Obama continued her South Africa trip today and made a few stops gardening and speaking with children in Johannesburg.

Pics of Mrs. O bringing her White House efforts across the world to South Africa, when you read on…

Our First Lady had a busy schedule of stops today.  The first were drop in visits on a forum set up by the state department to encourage leadership among young women in Africa. The 75 forum attendees, who were chosen to participate by the US government and photographed with FLOTUS yesterday, also attended her speech at Regina Mundi church this morning.

And just like she did at the White House in D.C., Michelle Obama helped the children of an impoverished town cater to their own garden today.  She went to Nanga Vhuthilo Center, a community center in Soweto that serves 300 family. FLOTUS and less than a dozen of the women from the leadership forum volunteered.

they planted carrots and spinach and tons of veggies.  And had some fun while doing so.

The kiddies of the center even sang her a "goodbye song" and danced the Setswana dance.  How cute!

Earlier in the day, she also helped a family pay homage to a 13-year-old boy killed by police in 1976:

Loves her.  She and the First Daughters and her other family members headed to the Cape Town airport a few hours ago….

First Lady Michelle Obama Gets Soccer & Push-Up Happy In Cape Town!

Posted by chubbyafro - June 24th, 2011

First Lady Michelle Obama is bringing her workout routine that gives her those arms we all envy over to Cape Town, South Africa.  During her diplomatic trip, she did push-ups and played soccer with the kiddies.  But she wasn’t alone–Archbishop Desmond Tutu was there to welcome FLOTUS as well!

Pics and deets inside…

It was all about the kiddies during Mrs. Obama’s stop in Cape Town today.  She hosted a soccer event with 55 high school boys and girls from the township at the capital’s brand new soccer stadium, and gave them a mini-inspirational speech after playing around with them a bit.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu got in on the soccer playing and push-ups as well.  Gotta love that.

Mrs. O rocked a colorful green blouse and navy blue slacks and her bright blue flats.

FLOTUS spoke to the kids about not being fearful of achieving higher levels than high school–and to not be afraid of attending University.

The White House reports that a retired cleric asked the First Lady: "What do you feel? How are you feeling being here?"
Mrs. O answered, gesturing to her two daughters, her niece and nephew: "It’s not about us now–it’s about them."

The Obama ladies’ next stop is Botswana.

Beyonce Gets Her “FLASH WORKOUT” On With First Lady Michelle Obama

Posted by chubbyafro - July 5th, 2010

Beyonce has teamed up with First Lady Michelle Obama and the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation to help fight and bring awareness about childhood obesity.  The chart topper has revamped her dance hit "Get Me Bodied" for the "Let’s Move! Flash Workout" campaign. Read on for the deets on the dance workout and watch Bey show off her dancing skills…

Beyonce’s "Get Me Bodied" dance track has been re-titled "Move Your Body" for the "Let’s Move! Flash Workout" campaign. Beyonce has made a video of herself and kids performing the dance moves that will be sent to all schools who are participating in the campaign. On May 3rd, middle school students will be able to practice the new workout routine and watch the video for the first time.

About the workout vid, Bey stated:

“I am excited to be part of this effort that addresses a public health crisis.”

“First Lady Michelle Obama deserves credit for tackling this issue directly, and I applaud the NAB Education Foundation for trying to make a positive difference in the lives of our schoolchildren.”

Check out the sneak peak of the vid:

Cute vid to help kids get motivated to eat healthier.

Speaking of the Obamas..

According to the NY Daily News, Oprah Winfrey has decided not to publicly endorse President Obama for his re-election campaign for 2012. Because her OWN Network ratings have been falling, she plans on focusing all her time on helping build and lure viewers to the station. A source added:

"Unlike in 2008, when a drop in ratings didn’t matter as much for the queen of TV, Oprah is now fighting every day to get people to tune into OWN," the source added, noting that while Winfrey will likely support Obama again, she will do so more privately.

"Helping a friend keep the most important job in the world is great, but making sure her OWN network thrives is now her priority," the source said.

Oprah was a major influence on President Obama’s mass appeal. Do you think that this will do more good or harm for the President’s 2012 re-election campaign?
