This Is R&B….This Isn’t R&B #1

May 21, 2009

One day I got into a disagreement with a online music site programmer (I first told this story on my other blog) about 50 Cent, the “rapper” not being an R&B artist:

50 Cent is NOT R&B. Why is his songs here?

wait a minute…why are any RAPPERS on the R&B playlist???

Um…rap and 50 Cent are certainly R&B, I must tell you. Just look at the R&B chart and there they are.

If you’d like, check out the R&B lite station which might be more to your liking. It’s Adult Contemporary R&B.

Thanks for listening to the finetune managed stations located at the ’stations’ tab up top! Tell others and keep listening! Barry Scott

um…Rap and 50 Cent ARE NOT R&B, I don’t care what the R&B chart states. You wouldn’t have put The Beastie Boys or Run DMC on the R&B section back in the 80s or 90s, would you?

That’s like saying that TOOL should be on the Pop station along with the likes of Natasha Bedingfield (forgive the spelling…)or Vanessa Carlton.

R&B Lite???? What does that mean? Who is that for? People who have been shot less than 9 times or only have the bottom teeth gold plated?

Boy, if I wasn’t insulted before…

Didn’t mean to insult you…but rap music is a BIG part of current R&B. R&B Lite is the same music without the rap, built for people who didn’t like the music situation.

You can always build your own station here. Try it!

Thanks for listening either way.

Sidebar:  Um…I hate it when people “um…” me.

Anyway, this is probably the same guy that was responsible for saying that Jeffrey Osborne and Marlene Dietrich were simular artists

My theory is that there are people across the country like my um…buddy, Barry Scott, making decisions like the 50 Cent one, watering down the genre of music I grew up listening to and still love today.  I know R&B when I hear it and I know Brown Eyed Pop, too.  So I am telling you:

This is R&B

This isn’t R&B

While Amp Fiddler is real R & B it can be boring. I’m not into artists like him or Dwele, Jill, etc. I can’t stand that Bohemian crap.

I hear you. That’s why I didn’t dig deep into his discography and picked a specfic song.

I dont consider Bouncy R & B, I consider her pop. There is a difference, but the difference is often not readily apparent to those who didnt grow up listening to the “real” R & B legends. Its hard to explain but it like obscenity…..you know it when u see it, and it is obscene to put Bouncy in the same class as the Whispers, Al Greene, and so many other greats I cant think of now…….but i assure you…….when I hear it…..I know it. :)

I saw that older artists like The Whispers and Al Green are being shuffled off to either a “Classic” and/or a “Traditional R&B” catagory.

Wait a minute! So, you’re saying that Beyonce can’t be R&B because she appeals to a wider audience, or because the background music doesn’t use live instrumentation?? Because that’s kinda what you’re saying now, and if that is the case, then you might as well say Stevie Wonder is not R&B, either.

I loooove the classics! I grew up listening to The Whispers, The Drifters, The Spinners, and so on. Beyonce may do a more commercialized version of R&B, but it’s still R&B. As long as the music is rooted in Gospel, Jazz, and Blues – either through the way the person is singing or how the melody is played -it’s still R&B.

I do agree, however, that this “Barry Scott” character doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about when he puts 50 Cent in the R&B category; I’ve NEVER seen 50 Cent on an R&B chart in my life! Oh yeah, Sam Cooke was spittin’ verses back in the 1950s…c’mon son!!!
